Pet CBD is its own conversation, not a smaller dose of human CBD. Cats and dogs metabolise cannabinoids differently from humans — and from each other. Cats in particular lack certain liver enzymes (UGT1A6) that process plant compounds efficiently, which means cat-specific formulations and dosing matter.
Never give a pet a human CBD product. Human formulations may contain xylitol, essential oils, or sweeteners that are toxic to pets. They also lack the species-specific carrier oils (often salmon oil for dogs, milder MCT for cats) that make pet products palatable + absorbable.
Start at the lowest indicated dose for your pet's body weight and observe for 7–10 days before adjusting. As a general guide:
Example: a 10 kg dog → start at 2.5 mg twice daily. A 4 kg cat → start at 0.4 mg twice daily.
If you see any unsteadiness, lethargy or appetite changes — reduce the dose, not pause-and-restart. Cannabinoids should be calming-not-sedating at correct doses; sedation = too much.
Senior-pet joint stiffness — adjunct to vet-prescribed anti-inflammatories, helps morning mobility in older dogs.
Situational anxiety — storms, fireworks, vet visits, kennel stays. Dose 60 minutes before the trigger event.
Post-surgical recovery — talk to your vet about timing relative to other meds.
Daily wellness — older pets in general decline. Lower doses long-term as part of a comfort-focused care plan.
Pet CBD is not a substitute for veterinary care. New or worsening symptoms (sudden lethargy, vomiting, change in toilet habits, weight loss) need a vet visit, not a higher CBD dose. If your pet is on other medication — anti-seizure meds, anticoagulants, antifungals, NSAIDs — talk to your vet about CBD interactions before starting.
