Buying a cannabis grinder in South Africa — what actually matters

A good grinder is the small purchase that improves every session. The difference between a R50 plastic dollar-store grinder and a R300 anodised aluminium 4-part with diamond teeth is felt every single time you use it.

Three things separate a great grinder from a mediocre one:

• Tooth shape — diamond-cut or shark-tooth grips and shears the herb cleanly. Cheap grinders use blunt nubs that crush rather than cut

• Closure — magnetic lid keeps contents sealed during transport. Friction-fit lids spill when bumped

• Material thickness — anodised aluminium grinders use 6 mm wall thickness on premium models; cheap grinders use 2–3 mm and warp under pressure

2-part vs 3-part vs 4-part grinders

2-part grinder (lid + chamber). Cheap, simple, no separate collection chamber. You scoop ground herb out the same way you put it in. Fine for occasional use; messy for daily use.

3-part grinder (lid + grinding chamber + collection chamber). The standard for most users. Holes in the grinding chamber drop the ground herb into the collection below — clean, easy to scoop. Magnetic lid keeps the chamber sealed.

4-part grinder adds a fine-mesh kief screen at the bottom. Trichome dust falls through the screen into a kief catcher. Heavier users accumulate ½ gram of kief per month from a 4-part — useful for sprinkling onto bowls, packing into joints, or making infused butter.

Aluminium vs plastic vs zinc — material trade-offs

Aluminium (anodised). Lifetime durability, lightweight, machinable with sharp teeth. Premium choice. Bulldog Amsterdam, Best Buds, Cannabuben house line all use anodised aluminium.

Plastic (ABS). Lightweight, ~½ the cost of aluminium, but teeth wear within 6–12 months of daily use. Pick plastic for a travel spare or back-of-the-couch grinder.

Zinc alloy. Heavy, cheap, often poorly machined. Avoid — the weight isn't a benefit and the teeth aren't as sharp as proper aluminium.

Grinder cleaning — monthly for daily use

Resin builds up on grinder teeth over time, slowing the cut and trapping ground material. Once a month for daily users:

• Tap out loose plant matter into a tray

• Disassemble all chambers

• Soak parts in 90%+ isopropyl alcohol for 20 minutes

• Scrub teeth + threads with a soft toothbrush

• Rinse with hot water, dry fully before reassembling

Don't use a dishwasher — heat warps anodised aluminium and the dishwasher detergent can react with the metal finish.
