Hemp & wellness products in South Africa — the gentle end of the plant

Hemp is the same plant family as cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) but bred over centuries for fibre, seeds and food rather than cannabinoid content. South African hemp products contain only trace amounts of CBD and THC — far below any pharmacological threshold — and are sold widely as food, beverage, and skincare.

Hemp tea — what it is and what to expect

Hemp tea is a herbal infusion made from dried hemp leaf and flower trim. It's naturally caffeine-free, slightly earthy in flavour, and often blended with rooibos, chamomile or peppermint to balance the grass-like profile.

What hemp tea doesn't do: it doesn't "get you high" (no meaningful THC), it doesn't deliver pharmacological doses of CBD (much smaller amounts than a CBD oil), and it doesn't have the same evidence base as oils or edibles. What it does do: provides a warm, calming evening ritual without caffeine, and adds the broader hemp-plant compounds (chlorophyll, micronutrients) to your diet.

Steep 1 teaspoon in 200 ml just-off-boiling water for 5–7 minutes. Add fat (oat milk, almond milk) to improve cannabinoid extraction — fat-soluble compounds dissolve better in milk than plain water.

Hemp seeds and hemp-seed oil

Hemp seeds are a complete-protein food (~25% protein by weight), high in omega-3 and omega-6 in a balanced ratio, and naturally rich in fibre, magnesium and zinc. They taste mildly nutty — work them into smoothies, salads, granola, yoghurt.

Hemp-seed oil (cold-pressed) is for cooking + dressings, not for sublingual use. The cannabinoid content of hemp-seed oil is essentially zero (the seeds don't contain meaningful cannabinoid resin), so don't confuse it with CBD oil — they look similar but the active ingredient story is completely different.

Difference from CBD products

CBD oil: extracted from the cannabinoid-rich flower + leaf trim. 150–1000 mg of CBD per 30 ml bottle. Pharmacological doses.

Hemp-seed oil: pressed from the seeds. <0.1 mg cannabinoids per 30 ml. Food product.

Hemp tea: brewed from leaf + flower trim. ~0.5–2 mg cannabinoids per cup. Light wellness ritual.

If you want a daily wellness ritual without the cost or commitment of CBD oil, hemp tea is a sensible entry. If you want measurable cannabinoid effects, scale up to CBD or THC oils.
