Rolling papers are the smallest purchase but the one with the biggest taste impact. The paper, gum strip, and bleaching method all change what burns alongside the plant — and what ends up in your lungs.
Hemp papers are made from hemp plant fibre. Slightly thicker, slow-burning, neutral-to-earthy flavour. Most popular pick for SA users — Bulldog Amsterdam, Cannabuben house line.
Rice papers are ultra-thin, almost transparent, near-zero flavour. Best for tasting the strain itself. Burns faster than hemp.
Flax papers sit between hemp and rice — medium thickness, cleaner burn than rice, stronger structure than the thinnest rice papers.
Avoid bleached white papers if you can — chlorine bleaching leaves trace residue that contributes to harsh smoke. Unbleached (brown/cream colour) papers are now standard with most reputable brands.
Single-wide (~70 mm × 36 mm). Joint-for-one, classic small format. Cannabuben house papers + Bulldog small.
1 ¼ (~78 mm × 44 mm). Slightly wider, more popular with regular users.
King-size (~110 mm × 55 mm). Big-enough-for-three, social-format, common in Bulldog + Juicy Jay's ranges.
Slim vs wide within the king-size: slim burns slower, wide gives more airflow.
Paper tips are the cheap default — fold/roll your own from card stock that comes with most papers, or buy pre-rolled card tips. They give the joint structure (no collapse) and stop loose herb getting in your mouth.
Glass tips are reusable — rinse with isopropyl alcohol weekly and they last years. Cool the smoke slightly via the glass mass, easier draw.
Ceramic tips add the most cooling but are fragile.
Hemp wraps are wider + thicker than rolling papers — designed for blunts, hold ~1 g comfortably. Flavoured versions (grape, blueberry, mango-passion) have natural flavour infused into the paper rather than coated, so the flavour is gentle and burns through evenly.
Juicy Jay's is the dominant SA brand — GMO-free hemp paper, vegan, comes in 2-wrap packs at ~R25 each. Less bitter than tobacco-leaf wraps; healthier alternative for blunt-rollers.
