Buying CBD oil in South Africa — what to look for

South Africa's CBD oil market has matured fast since the 2019 deregulation. Today there are dozens of brands available online — but only a fraction publish proper batch-level lab certificates, list cannabinoid content per dropper rather than per bottle, or use a clean MCT carrier instead of cheaper hemp-seed oil. The five things that separate a real CBD oil from a tinted-oil-with-marketing are:

• Certificate of Analysis (COA) from a SANAS ISO-17025-accredited lab — not the manufacturer's in-house lab

• mg per dropper clearly stated — most droppers hold 1 ml, so a 300 mg/30 ml bottle delivers ~10 mg per full dropper

• Carrier oil identified — MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) absorbs sublingually faster than hemp-seed oil

• Extraction method — supercritical CO₂ is the gold standard, ethanol acceptable, hexane-extracted oils should be avoided

• THC declaration — Schedule-0 CBD must be ≤0.001% THC (essentially undetectable)

How to take CBD oil

The sublingual route is the most efficient — drops held under the tongue for 60 seconds bypass first-pass liver metabolism and reach the bloodstream in 15–45 minutes. Swallowing the oil straight works too but absorption drops to 6–20% and onset shifts to 60–120 minutes.

Most adults respond to a starting dose of 5–10 mg of CBD once or twice daily. Note your response over 1–2 weeks before adjusting — cannabinoid effects are cumulative and the endocannabinoid system takes time to settle into a new baseline. Keep a simple journal (sleep quality, daytime mood, any side effects) for the first month.

CBD strength tiers explained

We stock 150 mg and 300 mg bottles. The 150 mg tier is for first-time users figuring out their personal response. The 300 mg tier doubles the mg-per-dropper for established users who already know they want a higher dose without changing the size of the bottle. Heavier daily users sometimes prefer to combine — for example a 300 mg morning bottle and a 150 mg evening bottle for finer dose control.

Cost-per-mg drops as strength rises, so going to a higher-strength bottle becomes more economical the longer you use CBD daily. Don't over-buy strength on day one — most users settle below 50 mg/day after their first month.
