Decarboxylation
Heating cannabis to activate its cannabinoids.
02 / Definition
What is Decarboxylation?
Decarboxylation is the chemical reaction, driven by heat, that converts the acidic cannabinoids in raw cannabis into their active forms. It happens naturally when flower is smoked or vaporised, and is done deliberately in an oven when making edibles or tinctures. Without decarboxylation, an infused product’s cannabinoids remain largely in their inactive acidic state.
